Swallow the capsules with a full glass of water. You can take clindamycin before or after food.

The most common side effects of clindamycin are feeling sick (nausea), being sick (vomiting), and tummy (stomach) discomfort.

If you develop diarrhoea while you are taking clindamycin, you must contact your doctor for advice before you take any more doses.

Clindamycin is an antibiotic that is used to treat serious bacterial infections. It is useful for treating joint and bone infections (such as osteomielite), and infections in the abdomen.

It is also used to treat tooth infections where other antibiotics have not worked. It works by stopping the bacteria which are the cause of the infection from multiplying.

Clindamycin is also available as a skin preparation for the treatment of acne, and as a cream for use in bacterial vaginosis.

Common side effects of clindamycin are:

Some medicines are not suitable for people with certain conditions. Before starting clindamycin it is important that your doctor or pharmacist knows:

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding. (Although clindamycin is not known to be harmful to babies, it is still important that you tell your doctor if you are expecting or breastfeeding a baby.)

    • The usual dose for adults is 150-300 mg (one or two capsules) four times daily.

    • The dose for children may be less.

  • Swallow the capsules with a full glass of water. This is so the capsules do not become lodged in your throat and cause irritation. Do not open the capsules.

  • Space out your doses evenly throughout the day.

    • Take a dose every six hours.

    • Take clindamycin before or after meals.

  • If you forget to take a dose, take one as soon as you remember. Do not take two doses at the same time to make up for any that have been missed.

  • Keep taking clindamycin until you finish the course, even if you feel better, unless your doctor says to stop.

  • Treatment usually lasts about a week, but may be longer for bone infections. See your doctor if you still feel unwell after finishing.

  • If you take clindamycin for over 10 days, you may need blood tests to check your liver and kidney function.

How long does it take for clindamycin to work?

Clindamycin starts to work immediately after the first dose. Most people notice improvement in their symptoms after 2-3 days, however, you should continue taking the full course as prescribed to fully clear the infection.

Yes, clindamycin is usually safe to take during pregnancy as research shows it does not raise the risk of birth defects. However, always let your doctor know if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant before taking clindamycin.
