There are no known negative interactions between Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) and Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor). In fact, these two medicinal mushrooms are frequently taken together in 'mushroom blends' because they work in different ways to support the body.
It is generally considered safe to take Lions Mane and Turkey Tail together as they target different systems and are not known to interfere with the liver enzymes that break down supplements.
Lion's Mane primarily contains compounds called hericenones and erinacines which focus on brain health and nerve growth. Turkey Tail is rich in polysaccharopeptides (PSK and PSP) which focus on supporting the immune system.
How to take Lions Mane and Turkey Tail together
Always start with a low dose to ensure you do not have an individual sensitivity or digestive upset.
If you are taking blood-thinning medication or have an upcoming surgery, consult your doctor first, as many medicinal mushrooms can have a very mild effect on blood clotting.
Important precautions
Surgery
Stop taking these supplements at least 2 weeks before any scheduled surgery. Both mushrooms may have blood-thinning effects that increase the risk of excessive bleeding during and after a procedure.
Diabetes
These supplements can lower blood sugar levels. If you take insulin or other diabetes medications, you must monitor your blood sugar closely as they may increase the risk of hypoglycaemia (dangerously low blood sugar).
Bleeding disorders
Lion's mane may slow blood clotting. It should be avoided if you have a bleeding disorder or are taking anticoagulant/antiplatelet medications (like warfarin or aspirin) as it increases the risk of bruising and bleeding.
Food and drink warnings
Alcohol
It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol when taking these supplements. Alcohol can place additional strain on the liver and may interfere with the immune-modulating effects these mushrooms are intended to provide.
