Taking iron supplements at the same time as Fluanxol (flupentixol) may reduce the amount of the medication your body absorbs. This could make Fluanxol less effective at managing your symptoms.
Why this happens
Iron can bind to certain medications in the digestive tract, forming a complex that the body cannot easily absorb into the bloodstream.
What you should do
To avoid this interaction, try to space the doses apart. It is generally recommended to take Fluanxol at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking your iron supplement. If you notice your symptoms returning, speak with your doctor.
Important precautions
Parkinson's disease
Fluanxol can significantly worsen the symptoms of Parkinson's disease and should generally be avoided.
Heart rhythm disorders (Long QT syndrome)
Fluanxol can affect your heart rhythm. You must tell your doctor if you have a history of heart rhythm problems or are taking other medicines that affect the heart.
Iron absorption interference
Do not take iron supplements within 2 hours of taking fluanxol or other medications, as iron can prevent your body from properly absorbing your other medicines.
Accidental ingestion by children
Keep iron supplements strictly out of reach of children. An overdose of iron is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under 6 years old.
Food and drink warnings
Alcohol
It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol while taking Fluanxol. Combining alcohol with this medicine can significantly increase drowsiness and dizziness, and may impair your coordination and judgement. It can also increase the risk of serious side effects like breathing difficulties.
It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol while taking iron supplements. Regular or heavy drinking can interfere with how your body stores iron and may increase the risk of stomach irritation or liver strain.
Caffeine (Coffee, Tea, Energy Drinks)
Caffeine can interfere with how Fluanxol works. High amounts of caffeine may reduce the effectiveness of the medicine or worsen symptoms of restlessness and anxiety. Try to keep your caffeine intake consistent and moderate.
Do not drink tea or coffee for at least one hour before or two hours after taking your iron supplement. These drinks contain tannins and polyphenols which prevent your body from absorbing the iron properly.
Dairy products (Milk, Cheese, Yoghurt)
Avoid consuming dairy products at the same time as your iron supplement. The calcium in dairy significantly reduces iron absorption. Leave a gap of at least two hours between taking iron and eating dairy.
Eggs and Whole Grains
Foods containing phytates (like whole-grain cereals) and certain proteins in eggs can interfere with iron absorption. It is best to take iron on an empty stomach, or with a small amount of food that does not include these items if the supplement upsets your stomach.

Can I take Sertraline and Fluoxetine together?
Taking sertraline and fluoxetine together significantly increases the risk of a rare but serious condition called serotonin syndrome. This happens because both medicines work by increasing the level of a chemical called serotonin in your brain. If levels get too high, it can cause symptoms like shivering, diarrhoea, confusion, severe muscle tightness, fever, and even seizures. Additionally, fluoxetine can slow down how your body breaks down sertraline, leading to a build-up of the drug in your system and increasing the risk of side effects.

Can I take Iron supplements and Sedoxil together?
Taking iron supplements at the same time as Sedoxil (mexazolam) may reduce how much of the medication your body absorbs. This could make the Sedoxil less effective at treating anxiety or helping you sleep.
