Can I take Iron supplements and Vitamin c together?

Taking Vitamin C alongside iron supplements can increase the amount of iron your body absorbs from your gut. This is generally considered a beneficial interaction for people with iron-deficiency anaemia.

Why this happens

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) creates a more acidic environment in the stomach and prevents iron from forming insoluble compounds. This keeps the iron in a form (ferrous) that is much easier for the small intestine to absorb into the bloodstream.

It is often recommended to take iron with a glass of orange juice or a Vitamin C supplement to help it work better. However, if you have a condition that causes iron overload (like haemochromatosis), you should avoid this combination. Always take iron on an empty stomach if you can tolerate it, as many foods and drinks (like tea, coffee, and dairy) can block iron absorption.
