Can I take Berberine and Milk thistle extract together?

Taking berberine and milk thistle together may increase the levels of berberine in your blood. This could lead to a higher risk of side effects such as stomach upset, diarrhoea, or low blood sugar. On the positive side, some studies suggest milk thistle might actually help berberine work better for managing cholesterol and blood sugar.

Why this happens

Milk thistle (specifically the component silymarin) can slow down the proteins in the gut and liver that normally pump berberine out of cells or break it down. This allows more berberine to stay in your system for longer.

It is generally safe to take these together, but you should monitor yourself closely for side effects like digestive discomfort or signs of low blood sugar (dizziness, shaking). If you are taking medication for diabetes or blood pressure, speak to your doctor first, as this combination might make those medications more potent.
