Why this happens

Atorvastatin and oxytetracycline are processed by different pathways in the body. Atorvastatin is primarily broken down by a specific liver enzyme (CYP3A4), while oxytetracycline is mainly filtered out by the kidneys. Because they do not compete for the same 'processing machinery,' they do not interfere with each other's levels in the blood.

You can take both medications as prescribed by your doctor. You do not need to change the timing of your doses or take any special precautions. However, as with any medication, if you notice unusual muscle pain or weakness (a rare side effect of statins), you should contact your doctor.

Pregnancy

You must not take this medicine if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as it may harm the developing baby. Use effective contraception while taking it.

Sun exposure

This medicine makes your skin much more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid direct sunlight and sunbeds, and use a high-factor sunscreen to prevent severe sunburn.

Muscle pain or weakness

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness. In rare cases, this can lead to serious kidney problems.

Grapefruit juice

Grapefruit juice contains compounds that can increase the level of atorvastatin in your blood. This can increase your risk of side effects, such as muscle pain or damage. Avoid drinking large quantities (more than 1.2 litres daily), though it is safest to avoid it altogether while on this medication.

Alcohol

While there is no direct interaction, drinking large amounts of alcohol while taking atorvastatin can increase your risk of liver problems. It is best to keep your intake within the recommended low-risk guidelines.

Dairy products (milk, cheese, yoghurt)

Dairy products contain calcium, which binds to oxytetracycline in the gut and prevents it from being absorbed properly. This makes the medicine less effective. Do not consume dairy products for at least 2 hours before or after taking your dose.

Food (general)

Oxytetracycline should be taken on an empty stomach, either 1 hour before or 2 hours after food. Food, particularly products containing calcium, iron, or magnesium, significantly reduces the amount of medicine your body absorbs.
