Taking amlodipine and atorvastatin (the active ingredient in Arovi) together can increase the amount of atorvastatin in your blood. This may increase the risk of side effects such as muscle pain, weakness, or, in rare cases, liver problems.

Why this happens
Amlodipine can slow down the body's ability to break down atorvastatin in the liver. This happens because both drugs use the same pathway (an enzyme called CYP3A4) to be processed. When amlodipine is present, atorvastatin stays in your system longer and reaches higher levels.

Back to contentsIt is generally safe to take these two medicines together, and they are often prescribed at the same time to manage blood pressure and cholesterol. However, you should inform your doctor if you experience any unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness. Your doctor may choose to limit your dose of atorvastatin or monitor you more closely.
