Why this happens

Alendronic acid is very difficult for the body to absorb and must be taken on an empty stomach. Glucosamine, especially if taken at the same time, could physically interfere with the absorption of the bone medication in the gut. Additionally, both substances can sometimes cause irritation to the lining of the stomach or oesophagus.

To ensure your bone treatment is effective, you must take your alendronic acid tablet first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with a full glass of plain water. Wait at least 30 minutes (preferably 60 minutes) before taking your glucosamine supplement, eating food, or drinking other liquids. If you experience new or worsening heartburn or stomach pain, speak to your doctor.
