Why this happens

Acetazolamide is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor that can increase the pH (reduce the acidity) of the stomach and upper digestive tract. Iron requires an acidic environment to be absorbed properly by the body. By making the stomach less acidic, acetazolamide reduces the amount of iron that enters your bloodstream.

To ensure you get the full benefit of your iron supplement, try to space the doses apart. It is usually recommended to take your iron supplement at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking acetazolamide. If you feel unusually tired or pale, speak to your doctor as they may want to check your iron levels.
