Why this happens
Vitamin C and paracetamol are processed by the same pathway in the liver (called sulfation). When taken together in large amounts, they compete for this pathway. This slows down how quickly your body can get rid of paracetamol. Conversely, paracetamol uses up the body's stores of sulphate, which Vitamin C also needs, potentially leading to lower Vitamin C levels.

However, you should avoid taking very high doses of Vitamin C supplements (typically over 1000mg) if you are taking paracetamol regularly. It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol when taking paracetamol, as combining them increases the risk of liver damage. If you have kidney or liver problems, speak to your doctor before combining these.
