Combining alcohol with sertraline can make you feel much more drowsy, dizzy, or lightheaded than usual. It can also affect your coordination and judgement. Furthermore, alcohol can make the symptoms of depression or anxiety worse, which may interfere with how well sertraline works for you.

Why this happens
Both alcohol and sertraline affect the central nervous system. When taken together, they have an 'additive effect', meaning they strengthen each other's sedative properties. Alcohol can also interfere with the chemical balance in the brain that sertraline is trying to correct.
What you should do
Back to contentsIt is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol while taking sertraline. If you do choose to drink, keep it to a very small amount to see how you react, and do not drive or operate machinery. Be aware that your tolerance for alcohol will likely be much lower than usual.
