Why this happens

Both medicines act on the central nervous system to slow down brain activity. Buprenorphine is an opioid and pregabalin is a gabapentinoid; when used together, their sedative effects add up, increasing the risk of severe drowsiness and respiratory depression (breathing failure).

You must speak to your doctor before taking these medicines together. If your doctor prescribes both, they will likely start you on the lowest possible doses. Do not drive or operate machinery while taking this combination. Seek medical help immediately if you experience extreme sleepiness, pinpoint pupils, or difficulty breathing. It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol, as it will make these dangerous side effects much worse.
