Why this happens

Iron supplements need a highly acidic environment in the stomach to be dissolved and absorbed properly. Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that works by reducing stomach acid. With less acid available, the iron cannot dissolve as well, so less of it enters your bloodstream.

If possible, take your iron supplement at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking pantoprazole. However, because pantoprazole lowers stomach acid for a long time, simply spacing them out may not fully solve the problem. You should have regular blood tests to check your iron levels. If your iron levels do not improve, speak to your doctor; they may suggest taking Vitamin C with your iron to help absorption or may consider an alternative treatment.
