Taking omeprazole and alcohol together can increase the risk of stomach irritation and may worsen side effects like dizziness or drowsiness. Alcohol can also increase stomach acid production, which works against the purpose of taking omeprazole.

Why this happens

Omeprazole reduces stomach acid, while alcohol can irritate the stomach lining and trigger the production of more acid. Additionally, both substances are processed by the liver, and combining them can increase the likelihood of feeling lightheaded or sleepy.

It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol while taking omeprazole. If you do choose to drink, keep your intake very low and monitor how you feel. If you experience increased stomach pain or severe dizziness, stop drinking and speak with your doctor.
