Taking bupropion with alcohol can significantly increase your risk of having a seizure (a fit). It can also make you feel more intoxicated and may worsen the side effects of the medication, such as dizziness, shakiness, or trouble sleeping. Some people also find that their tolerance for alcohol changes while on this medicine.

Why this happens
Bupropion lowers the 'seizure threshold', making a seizure more likely. Alcohol also affects the brain's electrical activity. When you drink alcohol or go through alcohol withdrawal while taking bupropion, these effects combine to make a seizure much more probable. Additionally, both substances affect the central nervous system, which can lead to increased drowsiness or confusion.
What you should do
Back to contentsIt is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol while taking bupropion. If you are a heavy drinker, do not stop drinking suddenly before starting bupropion, as sudden withdrawal can also trigger seizures; instead, speak to your doctor for a safe plan. If you do choose to drink, keep it to a very small amount and be aware that you may feel the effects of alcohol much more strongly.
