Taking melatonin while on the 'mini-pill' (progestogen-only pill) may increase the amount of melatonin in your body. This can make you feel much sleepier than usual, cause vivid dreams, or lead to a 'hangover' feeling the next morning. It might also slightly increase the risk of other melatonin side effects like headaches or dizziness.

Why this happens
The progestogen in your contraceptive pill (norethisterone) can slow down how quickly your liver breaks down melatonin. This causes the melatonin levels to build up higher and stay in your system for longer than they normally would.
What you should do
Back to contentsIf you decide to use melatonin, start with the lowest possible dose. It is best to take it only when you are ready for bed and have a full night's sleep ahead of you. If you feel excessively drowsy the next day or experience severe headaches, stop taking the melatonin and speak with your GP or pharmacist.
